Best of 2015

Well Damsels, 2015 was kind of sparse. I've been dwelling on the same themes: Mysterious women of power being coy and aloof, while usually taking on danger head on. This old video from the Kung Fu Panda TV series was the only muse I found on this 2015 Holiday trip.

Up on the housetop...

No reindeer are pausing...

It's Cubcake, up on the roof, staking out the seedy bar across the street.
She's snug in her insulated power-suit, ready to pounce on some thugs when they come out.

It's not exactly Christmas, but the snow is helping her stay out of sight.
And she's still wearing a cute scarf, even though she really doesn't need it.

Basic coloring in Photoshop, bashed out over a rough sketch.
I also wanted to work on some perspective drawing.

San Bernardino shootings

It's finally dawned on me:

So many people feel that their lives are in the toilet, that they are willing to vote for Trump, or shoot up a community center in the name of a terrorist cause. 30 years of war in the Middle East, reaganomics and rush limbaugh have turned the world into such a meat grinder, that we will beg for a police state.

Paris, Colorado and now San Bernadino; I wish we had better protection. I wish the causes for this butchery could be tamped down.

This sketch of a Zbornak in battle armor is all I can think of right now
as a protective spirit for the Holidays.

May her big mine-proof armored hooves stomp on the fat-cats, gun nuts and crooked politicians who foster this rageaholic nightmare we live in.

Wander Over Yonder - The Battle Royale

Hello Damsels, it's time for a late autumn wedding! Here's a screenshot from Wander Over Yonder -  The Battle Royale. Wander envisions a happy marriage between Lord Hater and Lord Dominator. Like that's gonna happen.

Oh yes, Wander starts a galactic war with every villain fighting over the "Ring of Invincibility". He was playing "telephone" with bystanders. His original message about an engagement ring for Lord Hater to woo Lord Dominator was mangled into the "Ring of Invincibility". Wander had pictured a beautiful wedding ceremony, with Sylvia as a lovely bridesmaid:

She cleans up nice, doesn't she? The low-cut gown in Brilliant Gold sets her off very well. And her hair and make up are perfect! Right... You have to forgive my fascination with her, but a wise female horse creature has always been an archetypal character for me.

But things take a slightly different turn after Lord Dominator is unmasked to reveal the young woman inside. This lead to Hater's sudden vision of his new home life, after the honeymoon of course:

I spotted Wander as a trophy above the fireplace mantle right away, but I didn't notice Sylvia as a rug on the floor until after a second viewing. Hater sure didn't forget Wander's best friend when he set out to make a home for his new family.

Hope you all have warm and cozy winter as we head toward the Holiday Season!

Date for a Halloween Party!

Leave it to Herman Bear, he's found the perfect date for the costume ball!

And she can dance too! Happy Halloween everybody.

(Rough ink colored in Photoshop, got some photos of LA and Canada bashed in there too.)

Halloween Romance

Lady Cobra flirts with Herman Bear at a Halloween ball.

Pencil sketch inked with Bimoji pens. Herman does have unusual taste in females, just as Lady Cobra has unusual tastes in shoes...

Happy Halloween gang!

Si Zentner - The Swingin' Eye!!!!!!!!

Wonder who the photographers and the art directors were. I'm not finding it on Google.

Sort of a companion piece for the characters on The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeosie poster. The legs and high heels are just the vehicle for some other message or abstract concept. In both cases, to me it says "get ready to depart from the norm!"

A friend at work sent me a link to Si Zentner's music, and this freaky album cover popped up.
Startin' to dig some of Si's big band jazz.

Wander over Yonder - Sylvia as Gigantor

Okay Damsels, after seeing the trailer for the Season 2 animatic of WOY, I couldn't resist this:

She's gigantic all right, but still...cuddly? Having Gigantor's raw power seems to go with her "Grrl" personality. At first, I quickly bashed her together out of polygon primitives in Maya.

As I worked, her charm started to come through. I had to slow down and really start to detail her.
Even "full-figured", she came out too svelte, too shapely, with million dollar legs. It's a battle to get her back to her giant robot state and follow the WOY animatic.

My Sylvia is still too adorable, but that's how I see her. Oh well. I added a basic 4 light setup, and started to render her in Mental Ray.

For some reason, the thought of Sylvia having real power, and actually being indestructible inspires me . Seeing her standing there, quiet, but still surly, confident and powerful makes her the perfect muse for late summer.

Wander Over Yonder - Sylvia as Gigantor Robot

I like Sylvia's new look-

as a Gender bending Gigantor!

Now that's power! I think it suits her for some strange reason.

She can even blast off like the original. These must be powers she secretly wished she had.

And here's Sylvia as a dashing adventurer. The scarf and the boots set off her costume nicely. Looks like they are turning up the heat on Wander Over Yonder for Season 2. There's a lot more action, and the new super villain is secretly a girl. We also get to see some male Zbornaks. I'm looking forward to seeing Sylvia strut her stuff.

Iron Kitty

Finally inked this Krusha McKitty this afternoon.

 Just inked her today.
Blocked in some basic colors, and used the Dodge and Burn tools to give her a little more dimension.
Maybe she'll be my muse for my summer trip.

Cat vs Bird cartoons

Hello Damsels, just taking this Saturday off to make a post. I just don't seem to have much time these days. Here's some rough inks with Boffette and Krusha McKitty in their latest power suits...

Boffette in her most recent and most reliable suit...

Krusha in her newest suit...

Boffette in her standard Navy Blue and Silver...

Krusha in Olive, Gray and Gold.
Have a happy 4th!

Merry Melodies - A Hick, a Slick, and a Chick

Hello Damsels, it's been a crazy bad
winter and spring. Here's an old Merry Melodies short directed by Art
Davis. Naturally, it has one attractive, demure, enticing yet basically
tasteful female anthropomorph which was the cliched standard for the
time.

Here's to some fun in the summer time!
(After all the horror this winter and spring, I think we deserve it.)

Disney XD's - Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil

Finally, a young damsel for 2015 who is cute, and has power. I guess her name is Star;
created by Daron Nefcy for Disney XD. Star is a 14 year old princess from another dimension. She also has a joyful attitude that spills over into sheer recklessness. It's always strange how anime' is transformed in the United States, and morphs into an American style.

(art copyright Disney)

But Star's voice and long hair appeal to me somehow. The Godzilla boots and her color scheme grab me as well. She seems to have a crush on the young guy named Marco.
Marco is a rather nervous, risk-averse young man. I can relate, especially when she can turn his world upside down the way Bewitched, I dream of Jeannie, or Sabrina could.

I'm a bit confused: Disney must want exposure, but they ask people to limit sharing this video. I will take it down if it becomes a nuisance. I saw this on Jerry Beck's Animation Scoop, so we can say it's his fault.

Spongebob Squarepants Pearl meets Emperor Awesome

Here's something I did last year, I thought I posted it on Damsels as well. But this blog needs a boost, so...

(Artwork copyright Disney and Nick Studios)

Here is Pearl from SpongeBob in the scene from Wander over Yonder's "The Fancy Party". Emperor Awesome tries to put some of his famous moves on Pearl the way he did on Sylvia, but I thought Pearl's reaction here is just as priceless. I though this mashup made sense since they are both sea creatures.
