DONNA DODSON Sculptures

Powerful yet charming, I stumbled across Donna Dodson's sculptures a few years ago. She sculpts  supernatural beings that fuse animal spirits with confident female archetypes. Her work also has a sense of humor: These are women of power, and yet the simplified animal heads make them seem playful and approachable.

(Art copyright Donna Dodson, photographer unknown.)

Most seemed dressed for a night on the town with long gloves, and the natural flow of the wood suggests they are wearing sophisticated, well tailored dresses. Even though they seem to come from the distant past, their supernatural poise puts them in touch with classic style and fashions. I would hold a door open for them. (You could almost hear them saying "Yes Ken, you had better. But thank you very much!")

Dodson's sculptures are also, well, voluptuous. And these ladies are not shy about it! The work reminds me of native American art with some Vogue magazine blended in. Suggestive yes, there's also a Joseph Campbell flavor running throughout the work. The bold shapes and stony silence of the pieces give Dodson's work a special place in the realm of Adorable Diabolical Damsels.

Boyfriend-Best Coast

And a different band with a similar theme: Best Coast. I got them confused with the Summer Twins, but this tune also has a romantic oldies vibe. I picture Cubcake singing this with the others as backup singers. *How dreamy*

Okay, back to reality. Cocktail hour is over.

Summer Twins - "I Will Love You"

Aw, what the heck. It's Friday evening, and it already feels like summer in So Cal. So here's a little cruisin' music. I was lucky to catch "I Will Love You" on KPFK one late (boring) Sunday afternoon last year. The Summer Twins bring a fresh bounce to good old doo-wop rock n' roll.

Even though they are not magical creatures, and they have no special powers, I'm making them Honorary Adorable Diabolical Damsels. Their music has a magic all its own.

Valentine's Day date odd pair up

Old sketch of Herman Bear and Lady Cobra from 2008. Here she towers over Herman, but still keeps her charm.

They looked a lot different back then. I used more colored pencil and pastels.

Valentine's Day secret love!

This sketch has been sitting around since 2010, and I don't think I will ever finish it. In this fantasy world, Herman Bear has had some relationships, believe it or not. (He's holding some candy and flowers.) Each would-be mate has amazing abilities and backgrounds, so Herman is never sure if the fault lies with him, the lady, or just the species-gap. Who can say?

Starting at the top going clockwise is "Boffette", the high tech jet puffin girl, then Azure, a gazelle lady. Next is Cubcake, the squirrel, kitty, whatever girl. Herman and Cubcake are just friends, they even get on each others nerves like brother and sister.

After that is Sapphire, a horse-lady from his college days. Nuff said! At 9 o'clock is a vixen, name unknown. There have been a lot of lovely vixens running around in this world, but being a bear made it hard for Herman to keep up with them. Last but not least is Lady Cobra, who is actually quite a sweet heart. They met when Herman Bear saved her life but that's another story.

All of these romances and relationships have a story. I'd like to tell them someday, but I don't want my work to get thrown in with the rest of the online trash.

Flamingo Roll Skate Waitress puppet

Well, here she is. She was cut from a scrap of cedar in my Dad's workshop. She is still very rough, I used a scroll saw to cut out her silhouette. She's nearly a foot tall! And I didn't just want to use a plastic lawn flamingo from the hardware store.

Don't know when I'll get around to fleshing her out. I especially want to work on her skates. (The skates are one of the few things that are sexy about her.) I was going to tear apart some cheap Hot Wheels-type cars from the dollar store, but I didn't have the heart to destroy them. Their wheels weren't quite right anyway.

Hope to get back to her soon and have a charming Maquette.

Beware Rule 63

I don't know why I'm posting this, other than the title (and, that I needed an entry for tonight). These artists really went the extra mile for some lame jokes. But it still falls within the concerns of this blog: my idea of female characters really having some power (mostly for justice). Most of the art, while well rendered, is, well, just not appealling to me. And it's definitely NOT for the kiddies.

You have been warned.

Winter 2014 sketches

Actually did these during Christmas and New Years... Happy belated New Year and Year of the Horse! Which is supposed to make it hard on us Rats I hear. I'm working on it so it won't get me down. I haven't had time to work on Adorable Diabolical Damsels until this SuperBowl Sunday.

Here's Jet Puffin again...

Miscellaneous sketches...

And an Ice Wolf with Herman Bear.

So begins 2014!
